Gravel & Cyclocross Handlebar Tape

For long gravel rides, aim for medium to thick tape: medium 2.5–3.5mm for balanced comfort and thick 3.5–4.5mm when you want maximum cushioning and vibration damping. Plush models like the Ergon BT Gravel are rated for fatigue reduction and work well on rough, bumpy routes.

Tacky, textured surfaces such as cross-hatch or woven patterns give the best grip in wet and muddy conditions because they bite into gloves and repel slipping. Rubber-topped tapes like the Brooks Cambium offer non-stretch wet grip and durable performance on humid or muddy rides.

If your bars are wide or heavily flared, extra-long tape—around 220cm—makes wrapping easier and ensures full coverage from drops to hoods. Planet Bike Gravel Cross offers 220cm lengths so you can wrap flared drops and still have enough to finish cleanly.

Look for non-stretch constructions and durable surfaces like rubber outers and woven textures, which resist abrasion and hold thickness over time. EVA foam underlayers provide damping, but avoid overstretching elastic EVA or silicone during installation to prevent damage.

Wrap with even tension and overlap each pass by about a quarter to a third so the tape builds a smooth, consistent cushion. Add small 5–8cm pieces over shifter clamps as suggested, and finish with the adhesive backing or end tape for a secure hold.
