Brown Gravel & Cyclocross Pedals

Clipless pedals give a secure connection and better pedaling efficiency on longer gravel rides and paved sections, with SPD two-bolt systems being very common. Flat pedals let you reposition your foot quickly and bail fast on technical descents, and models like the Crankbrothers Stamp 3 are a solid choice for that style of riding.

For muddy cyclocross, designs like TIME ATAC and Crankbrothers Eggbeater perform particularly well because their wide-angle or four-sided mechanisms shed mud with each step. Those open, self-cleaning designs keep entry and release more reliable in muck than boxed road-style systems.

Float controls rotational movement—options range from zero up to six degrees, with the LOOK X-Track offering adjustable float to help reduce knee strain. Release angle (typically 10–17 degrees) and Q-factor (around 52–57 mm) influence how easily your foot disengages and your knee alignment, so those specs change comfort and pedaling feel.

Check your shoe’s cleat pattern: SPD two-bolt cleats fit most mountain and gravel clipless pedals, while SPD-SL and proprietary systems require their specific cleats. If you run replaceable systems like Crankbrothers or TIME, be sure to get the matching cleats for that model rather than assuming universal fit.

Pedal weight matters most on long climbs—lightweight options like the TIME ATAC XC 8 at about 291 grams feel noticeably snappier than heavier designs near 474 grams. If training data is a priority, consider pedals with integrated power meters such as the Favero Assioma Pro MX-2, though those are a more specialized choice.
