Purple Gravel & Cyclocross Headsets

Think about your frame and riding style: External Cup offers versatility for road-to-gravel swaps and commonly pairs ZS44 upper with EC44 lower, Zero Stack gives a lower stack height for aggressive cyclocross geometry, and Integrated provides a clean look on modern gravel frames. Match the type to how much adjustability and cockpit height you want.

Measure the headtube top and bottom diameters plus your fork steerer—tapered steerers commonly use a 1-1/8 inch upper and 1-1/2 inch lower. Then use SHIS codes like ZS41 for 1-inch bores or ZS49/ZS44 to match the correct cup and bearing sizes.

Sealed cartridge bearings resist contamination and reduce friction, so they perform best in wet, muddy riding compared with loose ball setups. High-end sealed cartridges and precision options like Chris King DropSet’s angular contact bearings boost durability, and many sealed designs can exceed 10,000 km with proper maintenance.

Aluminum alloy cups and crowns are popular for lightness, often contributing to headset weights in the 50–100 g range depending on the model, while steel offers budget-friendly durability. Titanium hardware adds corrosion resistance with a favorable strength-to-weight trade, and examples like the Ritchey WCS use aluminum cups to hit around a 90 g total for elite gravel setups.

Zero Stack reduces front-end stack height to lower the cockpit and improve stability on fast descents and tight handling, which suits cyclocross racing and aggressive gravel setups. It’s commonly found in ZS44/EC44 configurations when you want minimal spacers and a sportier steering feel.
