Black Gravel & Cyclocross Cables

For gravel and cyclocross, stainless steel or PTFE-coated cables resist corrosion and reduce friction better than basic galvanized wire. Coated stainless and 1.2mm Slickwire-style diameters are well suited to wet, muddy conditions where low friction and rust resistance matter.

Sealed, low-friction housing with polymer linings and alloy ferrules is best for muddy cyclocross because it keeps contamination out and maintains smooth operation. Pro-level options like SRAM Slickwire Pro or kits with 3500mm sealed housing offer the most durable performance in wet, dirty conditions.

Start by measuring your frame routing and lever position, then select inner wires such as 3100mm or 2500mm and match housing lengths up to 3500mm so nothing binds. Also confirm head compatibility for Shimano, SRAM, or Campagnolo pull ratios and use road-style thinner cables for drop-bar gravel setups.

Yes — PTFE or polymer coatings, like those used on Shimano Optislick or Slickwire cables, lower friction and often make shifts feel crisper on rough terrain. Pairing coated stainless wires with low-friction housing reduces effort and helps prevent fraying over bumpy miles.

Straddle cable length and anchor height directly affect cantilever brake geometry, so fine-tune length to get the lever travel and pad clearance you want. Using stainless inner wires and alloy ferrules with crush ribs helps keep the system durable and better sealed against mud in cyclocross conditions.
