For most gravel riding a 160mm rotor is a solid balance of heat control and weight, while 180–220mm rotors give extra stopping power for heavy bikepacking or steep, loaded descents. Consider rotors like Shimano’s RT-CL900 with ICE TECHNOLOGY if you want improved heat dissipation and wobble resistance on long descents.

Cantilever rim brakes excel in cyclocross because their wide mud clearance helps keep braking consistent in wet, churned-up courses. Make sure your frame’s post hole spacing matches the cantilever arms and that the straddle-cable holder sits about 30mm above the tire for optimal leverage.

Metal sintered pads are tougher in mud and hold up better on steep, gritty descents, while resin (organic) pads are quieter and often work best on drier roads. Match the pad material to your typical conditions—mud, sand, or loaded rides favor sintered; everyday dry riding leans toward resin.

Verify your frame and fork’s rotor clearance and caliper mount type before buying, and confirm your wheel is true and centered to avoid rub. For cantilever setups also check the brake post holes and for disc systems double-check rotor size compatibility with the caliper mounting and any adapter requirements.

Shimano GRX hydraulic discs deliver consistent stopping power in mud and bad weather, and GRX groupsets add a +2.5mm chainline for wider tire clearance. The clutched derailleur helps retain chain tension over rough ground, and higher-end GRX options like RX800/RX820 (including RX815 Di2) bring crisper shifting and simpler maintenance.
