Gravel & Cyclocross Brakes

Hydraulic disc brakes deliver stronger stopping power and finer modulation on steep, muddy, or technical off-road sections, and their systems use mineral oil seals to resist corrosion and keep a consistent feel. Mechanical discs are simpler to set up and maintain and offer reliable performance on less demanding gravel routes without the need for bleeding.

Match the caliper mount to your frame and fork — modern gravel and CX frames typically use flat mount while older forks and frames use post mount. If your bike calls for flat mount, models like the Shimano GRX BR-RX820 are built around that interface and pair well with common rotor sizes near 160mm.

A common setup for gravel and cyclocross is a 160mm rotor up front with a 140–160mm rotor in the rear to balance stopping power and ground clearance. For heavy braking or long descents, choose rotors up to about 2.3mm thick to help resist fade.

Metallic pads stand up better to heat and contamination on long, steep descents, while organic pads often feel quieter and provide good initial bite on mixed terrain. If pad life matters, some systems like SRAM Force AXS are rated for 200+ hours, making metallic options a smart choice for high-mileage riders.

Most gravel brake systems are offered for 11- or 12-speed drop-bar configurations, so check lever pull compatibility and reach adjustment to match your shifters and hand size. Wireless electronic setups such as SRAM Force D2 AXS HRD or Apex AXS pair hydraulic braking with 12-speed wireless shifting, while mechanical options require matching cable pull ratios.
