BB drop influences stability and pedal clearance; gravel bikes typically use a 70–80mm drop and frame heights around 260–280mm for stable handling on mixed roads. Cyclocross setups favor higher clearances with 55–65mm drop and overall heights near 280–310mm to help with barrier hops and technical turns.

A 24mm spindle generally increases stiffness and resists axle twist, which is why external systems like Shimano Hollowtech II use that size for better power transfer. Modern alternatives such as SRAM DUB use a 28.99mm-style spindle to balance a narrower Q-factor with stiffness, so pick based on your crank and frame specs.

Threaded designs remove the press-fit interface that can cause creaks, and they’re straightforward to service without a press—T47 and traditional BSA shells make bearing swaps and maintenance simpler. Materials also matter; aluminum shells with steel or ceramic bearings hold up well in muddy gravel or ’cross conditions when the BB is properly faced and installed.
