Girls' Gray Hiking & Backpacking Boots & Shoes

Think about the hikes you'll do and the weight you'll carry. Low-cut hiking shoes suit day hikes on light to moderate trails and offer breathability, mid-cut boots provide ankle support for longer or uneven terrain, and high-cut backpacking boots handle multiday treks and heavy loads up to 20-30 pounds.

A good rule is to leave about a thumb's width of space at the toe, with a snug heel and a wide toe box to accommodate growing feet. Sizes typically run youth 13 to adult 3 with half-size increments, so try them on with the socks your child will wear on the trail.

Waterproof membranes such as Gore-Tex provide reliable protection in wet conditions and can offer hydrostatic head ratings up to 20,000mm for serious wet-weather use. If most hikes are hot and dry, breathable options like the Merrell Moab 2 Ventilator with synthetic mesh can keep feet cooler.

Expect about 10-20 miles of break-in for many mid- and high-cut boots because their stiffer midsoles and added ankle support need time to soften. Models like the Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX are noted for offering ankle support with relatively minimal break-in if you need quicker comfort.

Look for a rubber outsole with 4-5mm lugs and a Vibram or equivalent compound to maintain traction on wet rock, where grip retention often measures around 70-90%. Protective toe caps and abrasion-resistant overlays also help durability without sacrificing agility on technical terrain.
