Girls' Blue Hike & Camp Shorts

If you need chafe protection and a snug fit for trail running, opt for a compression shortie like the DSG 3” Compression Shortie that uses moisture-wicking fabric. For hot hikes or overnight trips, unlined utility or cargo shorts with a 5–6 inch inseam and multiple pockets give better ventilation and storage.

UPF 50+ fabrics block most UV radiation, so shorts carrying that rating provide strong sun protection on bright days; many REI quick-dry models include UPF 50+. Pairing UPF fabrics with breathable nylon or polyester blends helps keep skin covered while staying cool.

Think about how active your child will be — high-rise or adjustable waistbands hold shorts in place during scrambling, while mid-rise with a stretchy knit waistband is more forgiving for growth and layering. Sizes run youth XS to XL and many styles use knit waistbands for a secure, flexible fit.

Lightweight nylon or polyester blends with a stretch ripstop weave resist abrasions on brushy trails while keeping overall weight under about 5 ounces for many pairs. Reinforced seams and recycled-fabric options add durability and sustainability without sacrificing quick-dry performance.

For multi-day camping, utility or cargo shorts are usually better because they offer deep pockets and reinforced construction to hold small gear; the Columbia Tech Trail Utility Shorts are a good example. If you expect a lot of fast movement between camps, consider pairing cargo shorts with a shorter inseam or a compression liner for added comfort.
