Start by matching insect behavior and water column: dry flies float and excel during surface hatches, nymphs sink to imitate underwater insects, and streamers imitate larger prey like minnows. In summer or when fish chase terrestrial bugs, patterns such as Dave's Hopper and larger streamers are the better choice.

Floating lines are the most common for trout and work best with dry flies or shallow presentations; these PVC-coated lines often use embedded air bubbles for buoyancy. Sink-tip lines combine a floating belly with a sinking tip to reach deeper zones for streamers, while full sinking lines are used when you need to get down through the water column.

A 5-weight rod is the versatile starting point for most freshwater trout fishing because it balances casting ease and enough power for common trout sizes. Many beginner combos and Orvis setups pair a 5-weight with a moderate action and a matched reel to simplify getting on the water.

For delicate turnover and low-visibility connections, choose tapered leaders and finish with a fine tippet diameter appropriate to your fly size. Nylon offers stretch and knot forgiveness while fluorocarbon sinks slightly and is less visible underwater, so select the material based on presentation and water clarity.

Match reel type to retrieval needs and simplicity: single-action reels give a one-to-one spool rotation, multiplying reels use gears for faster pickup, and automatic reels employ a spring mechanism for quick retrieval though they’re less common. Also evaluate reel capacity, drag quality, and overall weight so the reel balances with your rod and line during a fight.
