Fishing Kayaks

A sit-on-top is best in warm climates and calm water when you want to stand and access gear easily; they use self-draining scupper holes. Sit-in kayaks keep you lower for wind protection and choppy-water control thanks to a lower center of gravity.

Pedal drives give hands-free operation and can push boats up to about 5 mph, but they can limit shallow-water access; the Hobie Pro Angler is a well-known pedal-driven fishing platform. Paddles are simpler and more forgiving in shallow or tight spots, while motors are an option when powered propulsion is preferred.

Rotomolded polyethylene is affordable and impact resistant but tends to be heavier, often in the 60–80 pound range, while thermoformed or composite hulls (found on Delta or Eddyline models) are lighter and track better but can cost more and require careful repairs. Inflatables use puncture-resistant PVC with multiple air chambers for easy transport to remote put-ins.

For multi-day trips, favor longer kayaks in the 10–13 foot range or consider a tandem to carry a partner and extra gear, since tandems and larger solos often support 350–500 pounds of capacity. Longer length helps tracking on open water while wider beams or tandems improve standing stability and load capacity.

Many anglers value built-in rod holders, bait wells, removable seats, and Yak-Power electronics integration for a true fishing setup; models like the Vibe Sea Ghost 130 come as angler packages with stability and storage. The Feelfree Moken 10 V2 is a good example of a lightweight sit-on-top that still handles common fishing chores.
