Black Crash Pads

Think about how you transport and how much landing area you need: hinge-fold pads compress with two fold points for easier carry, tri-folds unfold into larger standalone surfaces, and suitcase-style pads add waist belts and padded shoulder straps for portability. Match a tri-fold when you want maximum coverage for shared landings, or a hinge-fold if you prioritize a lower-profile packable option.

For harder climbs or aggressive landings, err on the side of more coverage—open dimensions commonly sit around 56 to 60 inches long by about 42 inches wide. Models like the Metolius Recon push that larger footprint (60 by 42 by 4 inches) to give extra margin when projecting burly problems.

Sandwich foam — often a 1:3:1 layout with 1 inch of closed-cell, 3 inches of open-cell, and 1 inch of closed-cell — balances rebound and absorption so you don’t bottom out on big falls. That construction plus total thickness of 4 to 5 inches gives reliable dissipation while keeping weights in the 14–17 pound range.

Many climbers find pockets and bottle holsters useful for keeping shoes and chalk organized on multi-pad setups, and premium models like the Black Diamond Erratic include a water bottle holster and removable suspension for versatility. If you’ll be stacking pads or hauling gear for group sessions, those extras can save time and reduce fumbling at the crag.

Expect most pads to weigh between about 14 and 17 pounds, with closed hinge-fold dimensions commonly from 28 to 42 inches long and 10 to 13 inches deep—factors that affect how easy they are to shoulder on an approach. For longer hikes look for suitcase-style carry or robust suspension systems like those on the Mad Rock Duo Pad to make carrying more comfortable.
