Gray Carry-Ons

Hardshells give rigid protection for delicate gear with materials like polycarbonate or ABS, while softshells use nylon or polyester for flexibility and weather resistance. Think about whether impact protection or packability matters more for your trips.

Most carry-ons aim to meet the common 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit and fall in the 35–45L range, which fits most U.S. airline cabins. Double-check your airline’s size rules and the bag’s geometry—wheel placement and external pockets can affect how it measures.

Rolling bags are best for airport-heavy trips where mobility matters, while duffels handle rugged gear hauls and travel packs shine for urban-to-trail transitions. If you want both options, models like the Osprey Sojourn 45L offer wheeled-to-backpack versatility for mixed itineraries.

Expect a range from water-resistant softshell nylons to fully protective hardshells, and some bags carry IPX water-resistance ratings for wet conditions. For high exposure, look at waterproof recycled fabrics used on pieces like the Patagonia Black Hole duffel.

Yes, many 35–45L carry-ons include padded laptop sleeves that fit up to a 17-inch computer alongside compression straps for clothes and gear. Pay attention to internal organization and a laptop compartment’s placement to keep the load balanced.
