Yellow Alpine Skis

Match the ski to where you’ll spend most of your time: on-piste and race skis are built for speed and carving on groomers, while all-mountain skis (often up to about 90 mm underfoot) give versatility for groomers, moguls, and occasional powder. For deep powder and off-piste terrain pick freeride skis with wider waists between 90–115 mm for better float; models like Atomic’s Redster lines show how purpose-built race skis differ from freeride shapes.

Narrower waists around 65–75 mm suit high-speed carving and technical groomed snow, whereas wider waists improve flotation in soft snow. All-mountain skis sit in the middle (up to ~90 mm) to handle both groomers and softer patches, and alpine touring widths (84–102 mm) balance uphill efficiency with downhill flotation.

Alpine skis typically use standard fixed-heel bindings that follow the ISO 5355 safety and release criteria, while alpine touring requires specialized touring bindings that allow heel lift for climbing and lock down for descent. Some all-mountain models are marketed as compatible with touring bindings, giving you dual-use potential if your bindings and boot norms match.

Turn radius tells you how tight a ski will carve—short radius skis under about 13 meters are quicker in technical terrain, while long radius skis over 17 meters favor stable, fast turns. Rocker in the tip and tail eases turn initiation and adds float in variable snow, so pairing radius and rocker lets you tune a ski’s behavior for your preferred terrain.

Lightweight touring skis use pared-down sidewalls and efficient layups—wood cores with fiberglass and carbon or purpose-built designs like Dynafit’s DNA 4.0 aim to reduce climb fatigue while keeping decent downhill performance. Stiffer builds with carbon fiber reinforcement and metal elements improve edge hold and responsiveness, but they usually add weight compared with minimalist touring constructions.
