Gray Alpine Ski Bindings & Brakes

Alpine bindings are built for resort downhill performance, prioritizing power transfer and robust DIN-certified construction with plastic, metal, and composite materials. Tech bindings shine for long uphill skinning because they are ultralight (often under 1 kg per pair), while frame and hybrid options balance ski flex and downhill responsiveness and can offer heel lift up to about 45 degrees.

Match your boot sole to the binding: alpine models accept DIN, GripWalk, or MNC soles, whereas tech and some hybrid bindings require boots with tech/pin inserts. Models like the Salomon Shift are MNC-compatible if you want full DIN downhill performance together with touring capability.

Brakes should cover your ski waist to prevent dragging, with common brake widths running from about 90 mm to 130 mm to suit narrower piste skis or wider freeride boards. A brake that’s too narrow will catch or drag, while an oversized brake adds weight and can rub in tight turns, so match the brake width to the ski’s measured waist.

DIN settings should reflect your weight, ability, and skiing style; bindings on this page offer ranges from roughly 0.5 up to 18+ depending on the model. Lower Type 1–2 ranges are appropriate for beginners and lighter skiers, while Type 3 or higher suits aggressive adults—examples include the Marker Griffon with a 4–13 DIN range.

Lightweight tech bindings use alloys and minimalist construction to save weight but still provide multi-directional release and reasonable downhill reliability for backcountry use. If you prioritize sheer downhill robustness, look at hybrids or alpine-oriented models like the Marker Duke PT, since alpine pairs can weigh around 2 kg per pair compared to tech sets under 1 kg per pair.
