A floating fly line stays on the surface of the water, making it ideal for fishing with dry flies. In contrast, a sinking line is designed to sink below the surface, allowing you to reach fish that are deeper in the water. Choosing the right line depends on the type of fishing you plan to do and the depth at which the fish are feeding.

The sink rate you choose should match the depth of the water and the behavior of the fish. For example, if you're fishing in deeper waters where fish are located at 10 feet, a line with a faster sink rate (like 3 ips) would be more effective. Conversely, if fish are near the surface, a slower sink rate or a floating line may be better.

A sink tip fly line combines the benefits of both floating and sinking lines. The floating section allows for easy casting and visibility on the surface, while the sinking tip helps you reach fish that are closer to the bottom. This versatility makes it a great choice for various fishing conditions.
