The Osprey Kamber 20L Backpack was purpose-built for exactly that balance, sized conservatively enough to move freely on the descent while still holding every backcountry essential organized and within reach.

Osprey built the Kamber around a dedicated avalanche safety pocket that keeps your shovel and probe separated from the rest of your gear and ready to deploy without digging under layers of clothing and snacks. A fleece-lined goggle pocket protects lenses through cold approaches, and an insulated hydration sleeve keeps water from freezing on sustained cold days above treeline. The dual-position helmet net stows your lid cleanly on the uptrack and stays out of the way on the way down, and the main compartment divider separates wet gear from dry, so a damp layer doesn't ruin everything else in the pack. Diagonal ski carry and both vertical and horizontal snowboard carry options cover the full range of objectives, and the padded hipbelt with two zippered pockets keeps fast-grab essentials right where you need them without opening the whole pack to find them.
