Women's Red Trail Running Shoes

Think about the type of run and terrain: minimalist options like the Altra Lone Peak 9 with low stack heights and flexible soles suit short, technical outings where natural foot motion matters. Moderate cushion (around 24–30 mm) is ideal for everyday mixed terrain, while maximalist foams in the 34–40+ mm range—seen in models like the Hoka Mafate Speed 4—offer extra shock absorption for long ultras.

When sizing, leave extra room in the forefoot if you need a wide toe box—models such as the Altra Lone Peak 9 feature a roomy toe area and zero heel-to-toe drop. Make sure the heel and arch feel snug to prevent slipping, and try them with the socks you’ll run in to confirm the heel lock.

Shoes with aggressive 4–5 mm lugs and sticky compounds perform best on wet rock, and Vibram Megagrip outsoles are known for superior traction on slick surfaces. Also favor multidirectional lugs and abrasion-resistant rubber so the outsole sheds mud and holds up on rough, technical ground.

For long ultras, extra cushion reduces impact over many miles—maximalist foams in the 34–40+ mm range provide that added shock absorption. If you prefer a more responsive ride, consider plush-yet-springy options like the Hoka Zinal 2 or a balanced midsole around 24–30 mm instead.

Rugged models with rock plates, reinforced toecaps, and durable TPU or Kevlar uppers—examples include the La Sportiva Bushido III and Akasha—are designed for steep, alpine routes. Also check for dense heel collars and abrasion-resistant outsoles to keep grit out and protect your feet from sharp rock.
