Women's Black Mittens

Lightweight fleece or wool mittens are best for hiking and mild winter days above freezing, while midweight insulated mitts with weather membranes excel at all-mountain skiing in 0–30°F. Heavyweight leather or Gore-Tex models handle extreme backcountry touring and sub-zero storm conditions.

For resort days in that range, a midweight insulated mitten with a breathable membrane and about 100–200g synthetic fill offers a good balance of warmth and moisture control. The North Face Etip Mitt, for example, pairs 100g Heatseeker insulation with touchscreen-capable fingers for on-mountain convenience.

Fit matters more than length alone; try women's-specific patterns with narrower wrists and shorter fingers and test thumb-to-palm reach to avoid seams that bunch when you grip poles. Sizes typically run XS to XL and many styles come in half-sizes like S/M or M/L, so try the size that lets you make a fist without excess material.

Goatskin or bonded leather palms with Pittards leather grips and a 3-layer Gore-Tex shell give the most durable, waterproof performance in wet snow and heavy use. Also look for seam-sealed construction, DWR treatment, and double-stitched seams, which together support long-season durability and a waterproof rating in the 5,000–20,000mm range.

Heated pockets and removable liners are great if you get cold easily or want a mitten that adapts from resort days to après; removable liners also dry faster after a wet day. Touchscreen compatibility is common—around 80% of models—and lighter options like the Black Diamond Mercury Mitt offer packability and bonded leather durability if you value weight and abrasion resistance.
