Rim caliper brakes are lighter and cost-effective, working best in dry courses and for lighter riders thanks to alloy or carbon construction. Disc brakes deliver roughly 20–30% more stopping power in wet conditions and reduce required hand force, which helps on technical descents.

Hydraulic discs give very responsive modulation and use sealed fluid lines for lower upkeep, while mechanical discs rely on cables, add some weight, but still offer consistent modulation. If wet-weather bite matters, models like SRAM Red eTap HRD are tuned for strong performance.

Integrated aero brakes are hidden in the fork at the front and under the bottom bracket at the rear, so you need to confirm your frame was designed for that type of integration. Aero-integrated systems minimize drag by smoothing cable housing and tucking calipers into the fork and under the BB, which pays off on flat, high-speed efforts. Verify compatibility with your frame and note some integrated sets aim for lightweight specs under 200g per brake set while requiring clean routing for long-term durability.

For balanced stopping without excess weight, 140–160mm rotors are common choices that provide dependable power for time trials. Also confirm your frame and hub use the 12mm thru-axle standard for secure wheel attachment and proper 5–10Nm torque retention; hydraulic options like Shimano Dura‑Ace R9170 pair well with those rotors.
