Black Touring Skirts

Spray skirts are the go-to choice for active skinning and variable terrain because lightweight nylon shells (often 100–250 grams) block snow without adding bulk. Insulated skirts, like the Mountain Hardwear StretchDown Skirt, are better for low‑intensity or static stops when synthetic or down insulation and added warmth matter more than minimal weight.

Aim to size the skirt to accommodate full‑length base layers and a mid‑layer pant underneath while still allowing the waistband to sit comfortably high. Most women's cuts come with tapered designs and high waistbands that extend to mid‑thigh or knee and include ankle cinches to keep snow out.

Nylon and nylon‑blend shells used in spray skirts shed wet snow well and offer abrasion resistance where you need it most. For insulation, synthetic fills perform better in damp conditions than natural down, while quilted constructions balance mobility and weather resistance.

Yes—spray skirts are designed as protective barriers during uphill skinning and lively traverses, providing snow exclusion while preserving leg mobility. Models with elasticated cuffs, such as the Shockwave Bungee Spray Skirt, secure around boots without restricting stride.

Insulated skirts trade minimal weight for added warmth, making them ideal for rest stops or lower‑intensity touring where you want extra insulation without a full pant change. Pieces like the Smartwool Smartloft Pull‑On Skirt or the Mountain Hardwear StretchDown Skirt use synthetic or down‑style construction to deliver warmth around 0°F to 40°F ranges while still allowing decent movement for cross‑country or running‑style touring.
