Gray Sunglasses & Goggles

Think about speed, sun intensity, and exposure: wraparound sunglasses like the Zeal Selkirk hug the face for wind protection on fast descents, glacier glasses with side shields are built for intense high‑altitude sun, and full ski goggles give full-face coverage for storms, powder, and cold. Each style trades off weight and coverage, so match the design to whether you need ultralight touring gear or maximum protection.

Match VLT to the expected brightness: VLT 2–4 works well for bright glare while a 0–4 REACTIV range gives flexibility from stormy to sunny conditions. REACTIV photochromics (shifting in seconds between 0–3 or 1–3) adapt quickly on mixed terrain and keep you from swapping lenses as light changes.

Start by considering your face shape and the available fit templates—medium, large, or Asian fit—to avoid gaps and pressure points; adjustable straps help dial in fit for goggles with tall or wide fields of view up to about 200 degrees. Cylindrical or toroidal lens geometries also affect perceived distortion and coverage, so try a pair on to confirm the seal and sightlines.

Frames made from TR‑90 or Grilamid and lenses in polycarbonate or NXT offer a good balance of low weight and shatter resistance, and many models meet ANSI Z87.1 impact standards for extra protection. Durable touches like hydrophobic coatings, neoprene cases, and magnetic side shields improve longevity when you’re handling rough conditions.

Anti‑fog fans that deliver airflow up to about 30 CFM can clear moisture fast without adding heat, while heated lenses that reach roughly 50–60°C actively prevent ice and fog buildup in very cold storms. For prolonged cold exposure, heated options often outperform passive ventilation, but fans plus good ventilation often suffice for mixed winter touring.
