Blue Stand-Up Paddleboard Paddles

It depends on your activity: high-aspect rectangular blades are longer and thinner and excel for racing and long-distance touring, while teardrop blades deliver immediate power for surfing and slower-cadence strokes. Dihedral and scoop designs give more stability and reduced flutter for recreational paddling, and blade area (measured in square inches) affects how much power you get per stroke.

The standard sizing method is to stand the paddle vertically with the blade on the ground and reach one arm overhead so the T-grip rests in the bend of your wrist. For most adults paddles typically range approximately 6 to 8+ inches above head height, and adjustable shaft systems let you fine-tune length for your body and stroke.

Carbon fiber shafts save weight and reduce fatigue on longer sessions, while aluminum and composite blends trade some weight for durability. Standard shaft diameter is 29mm and handles come in EVA foam, rubber, or plastic with T-grip or palm-grip options, and brands like Unifiber focus on energy-efficient carbon designs for endurance paddling.

Lower-offset blades between 0 and 8 degrees tend to suit surfing and whitewater by orienting the blade for quicker catches, whereas higher-offset blades between 8 and 12 degrees keep the blade more vertical for racing and touring. Also consider dihedral options—single or double dihedral patterns help direct water flow and reduce flutter for a smoother stroke.

Adjustable and 3-piece paddles are excellent for travel because the sections break down for easy packing and adjustable length systems cover multiple users or conditions. Keep in mind that high-end travel models often combine 3-piece construction with lighter materials, and REI Co-op offers several durable, teardrop-shaped options well suited to trip use.
