Yellow Ski & Snowboard Car Racks

If you head to resorts occasionally, a roof-mounted clamp like the Thule SnowPack 6 is a versatile choice for carrying up to 6 skis or 4 snowboards exposed to weather. For quick tool-free trips use a SeaSucker Classic on smooth glass, pick a Kuat hitch rack for frequent rear access, or choose an enclosed Thule Force 3 box to protect gear on long winter drives.

Capacities vary by carrier type and model, typically from 2 to 6 pairs of skis or 2–4 snowboards; models like the Yakima FatCat EVO 6 and Rhino-Rack 576 advertise 6-ski capacity. Also check weight limits—many carriers rate up to about 44 lbs per pair, which matters for heavy powder setups.

Check your vehicle's crossbar spacing and hitch size before buying to ensure a secure fit. Roof racks generally need crossbars spaced 24–36 inches apart, hitch racks require a 2-inch receiver, and suction cups need flat, curved-free glass for proper mounting.

Enclosed boxes offer strong weather protection because ABS plastic shells resist impact and road salt in harsh conditions, as seen on models like the Thule Force 3 and SkyBox NX Skinny. They reduce direct exposure and make packing more secure than clamp-style racks, though they trade off some quick roof access.

Materials and shape both matter: aerospace-grade aluminum with powder-coated finishes on Rhino-Rack or Yakima models improves corrosion resistance while padded rubber cradles protect ski bases. Aerodynamic designs and features like the Thule SnowPack Extender's one-push locks help reduce wind noise at highway speeds and speed up loading.
