Red Ski Protective Gear

A practical setup is one beacon, probe, and shovel per person so partner rescue is possible; most beacons transmit at 457 kHz and commonly offer about a 60 m range with ~250 hours of battery life. Pair that with a collapsible probe for fast pinpointing and a sturdy shovel with a reinforced shaft for reliable burial extraction.

For full-day tours, a 25–28L airbag like the Mammut Pro Protection Airbag gives room for layers, tools, and a canister while staying compact; smaller 8L bags suit fast, lightweight runs. Make sure the pack’s harness and hip belt are adjustable and match your torso length (S–XL) so the canister and airbag ride high and don’t restrict movement.

Look for ergonomic curvature and gender-specific sizing since men’s and women’s protectors are shaped differently to match spine geometry, and choose CE EN 1621-2 Level 2 rated inserts for higher impact absorption. Try models like POC back protectors which balance low bulk with mobility and sit comfortably under a shell or jacket.

A helmet with MIPS rotation protection and a tough polycarbonate shell reduces rotational and impact forces; confirm it meets ASTM F2040 or EN 1077 standards for alpine use. Fit is key, so measure head circumference (typical ranges are 51–63 cm) and use adjustable liners and retention systems for a secure, non-shifting fit.

Prioritize packs with integrated avy tool pockets, reinforced bottoms, and waterproof laminates so shovels and probes stow securely in deep snow and wet conditions; many winter packs fall in the 20–40L range for day missions. Also check for an adjustable harness and a supportive hip belt if you plan to carry heavier loads or ski mounts, and consider vest-style options like the DB Snow Pro Vest 8L for minimalist tool access.
