Purple Running Hydration

Handheld bottles are the simplest option, typically holding 10–18 ounces and working best for shorter runs of 5–20 miles or 1–4 hours. Hydration belts use multiple small bottles (around 10 ounces each) for a minimalist, hands-free carry, while vests and backpacks hold 500 milliliters to 2 liters or more and add storage for fuel and layers on longer trail or ultra efforts.

For half marathons and longer efforts you’ll generally want a vest or backpack that carries 500 mL to 2 liters (or more) so you can bring fluids plus gels and a light layer. Brands like Nathan and Osprey make lightweight vests that balance storage and a snug, low-profile fit for trail and ultra distances.

A snug, low-profile fit with a proper hipbelt helps distribute weight and minimize bounce during motion. Systems that use multiple smaller bottles or front-shoulder pockets for quick access reduce movement, and belts such as the Salomon Pulse are designed for stability with minimal weight.

Soft flasks that shrink as you drink cut down on sloshing and bouncing, which many runners prefer in heat and humidity. If you plan to add ice on hot days, wide-mouth options like the Amphipod Hydraform Ergo-Lite Ultra accept ice cubes and make refilling easier.

Look for vests that sit snug to the body with front shoulder pockets and room for at least 500 mL to 2 liters of fluid while keeping overall pack volume small. Minimalist vests focus on low profile and quick-access pockets for gels, whereas larger backpacks can offer up to 15 liters of total carrying volume if you need to haul extra gear.
