Red Road Wheel Small Parts

Measure your frame's dropout width and note whether it uses a 9mm quick-release or a 12mm thru-axle; hub listings typically show front spacing of 100mm and rear spacing of 130–142mm. Matching axle type and hub spacing ensures end caps and bearings line up so the wheel installs and rides correctly.

Tubeless setups help reduce punctures in wet or rough conditions and many tubeless-compatible rims and Zipp tubeless hubs are rated to seal up to about 100psi. Clincher rims remain a reliable choice for everyday paved roads, while hookless rims can make tubeless seating easier.

For steep climbs you’ll favor shallower rims around 30mm and lighter wheelsets; many climbing-oriented builds aim for under 1500g per wheelset, and Shimano Dura-Ace examples come in near 1260g for race-focused weight savings. Deeper carbon rims in the 45–60mm range improve aerodynamics for time trials and fast group rides, and Elite Wheels carbon rims emphasize stiffness-to-weight.

A typical balance is 18–24 spokes on the rear and 16–20 on the front, with butted or bladed spokes used to save weight and improve aerodynamics. Stainless steel or titanium spoke options increase durability, and you can choose J-bend or straight-pull patterns to match hub flange geometry.

Ratchet-style freehubs provide quicker engagement and many hubs include sealed cartridge or ceramic bearings to lower friction by roughly 20%. Confirm the freehub body supports 11/12-speed cassettes and that the hub's axle/end-cap configuration matches your frame, such as quick-release or thru-axle setups.
