Blue Road Tires & Tubes

Different tubes suit different priorities: butyl is the everyday choice for commuters thanks to durable isobutylene construction and easy repairs, while latex appeals to racers for lower rolling resistance and weighs around 80 grams. TPU tubes, like Tubolito or Schwalbe Aerothan, target weight-conscious racers and gravel riders by offering very low mass and good puncture resistance.

Start by matching the tube diameter to your wheel—700c is standard for road bikes—and then choose a tube that covers your tire width, for example 700x20–25 mm for narrow race tires or 700x28–37 mm for gravel. A correctly sized tube sits without pinching or excess slack, which helps prevent flats and poor seating.

Match the tube valve to your rim’s valve hole: most road rims use Presta, while some hybrid or older rims accept Schrader, so verify the hole diameter before buying. The valve choice also affects pump compatibility and convenience on the road.

Latex gives the best elasticity and lower rolling resistance favored by racers, typically weighing about 80 grams, whereas TPU options claim similar rolling resistance at roughly half the mass of latex. Premium TPU models such as Tubolito and Schwalbe Aerothan aim to balance weight savings with improved flat resistance for gravel and race use.

Yes—one of butyl’s strengths is easy repairability with standard puncture kits, and its isobutylene construction also offers solid air retention of roughly one psi per day. For long tours you might pick a heavier-gauge butyl tube for added durability on rough surfaces.
