Gray Road Pedals

Flat platforms are best for beginners, commuting and short rides when you want to wear regular shoes and have easy release. 3‑bolt systems like SPD‑SL suit performance road cycling and long climbs with stiff road shoes, while 2‑bolt SPD pedals are better for touring and mixed use thanks to recessed cleats and easier walking.

Stiff road shoes with smooth, non‑grippy soles and protruding cleats are required to mate properly with 3‑bolt SPD‑SL pedals. For example, setups like the Shimano Ultegra PD‑R8000 are built around that shoe-and-cleat geometry and a low 16mm stack height, which helps maintain an efficient pedaling position.

Stack height changes how close your foot sits to the crank, and a lower stack height—around 16mm on some road models—typically improves pedaling efficiency and feel. Cleat float governs lateral movement before release, and SPD systems generally offer more float for comfort while 3‑bolt road systems are usually stiffer for power transfer.

Dual-sided hybrid pedals are ideal when you need to switch between cycling shoes and everyday footwear because one side is clipless and the other is a flat platform. Many riders opt for models from Wahoo and similar brands that combine adjustable tension with a sizable platform for stable footing on the flats.

Many flat platforms are made from alloy or composite materials and include replaceable pins to restore grip as they wear. Keep sealed bearings serviced and swap out worn pins to maintain smooth spinning and traction through regular commuting or recreational use.
