Gray Road Headsets

Threaded headsets work well for older bikes and touring setups where on-the-road adjustability matters, while external cup headsets excel for road racing thanks to protruding cups and large bearings like 52x40mm. Integrated headsets suit lightweight frames but demand precise frame matching to avoid play or binding; models like the Funn Descend EC show how external cups favor durability and easier maintenance.

Match the S.H.I.S. codes for upper and lower outer diameters—common sizes include 44mm and 51.8mm—and the inner diameter must fit your steerer, whether a straight 28.6mm or tapered 1-1/8" to 1.5". Confirm press-fit compatibility with your frame’s head tube to prevent binding or premature play.

Ceramic bearings, as used in Cane Creek 40-Series models, can feel smoother and reduce friction, while sealed stainless cartridge bearings offer strong corrosion resistance for wet or coastal riding. Consider ceramic if you prioritize longevity of smoothness and slightly lower weight, but stainless is a robust, low-maintenance alternative.

Zero stack (ZS) headsets lower stack height—often in the 8–20mm range—helping create a sleek, aggressive front end suitable for modern road geometries; examples like the Ritchey Comp ZS44/28.6 are built for that low-stack fit. External cup headsets add front-end height because of the pressed cups, yet they generally offer easier upkeep and long-term durability.

Yes—angle-adjustable systems such as the Cane Creek AngleSet let you tweak head angle by 1–2 degrees to subtlely change handling, while damped options like the Cane Creek ViscoSet help reduce speed wobble. These add-ons influence ride feel but require the correct headset and fork match to work safely and effectively.
