Green Road Derailleurs

Short-cage (SS) derailleurs are compact and best for narrow-range cassettes like 11-28T or 11-34T when you want lighter weight and better aerodynamics. Medium-cage (GS) units handle moderate gear ranges found on gravel or cyclocross bikes and give you extra chain wrap for wider setups.

Make sure the derailleur’s speed rating matches your cassette and shifters—road options span 9-, 10-, 11-, 12- and 13-speed systems. Also check the maximum sprocket size (many road derailleurs handle up to 28T or 34T) and stick to the same brand ecosystem when possible, since Shimano 11-speed parts, for example, are designed to work together.

Electronic derailleurs deliver very precise, repeatable shifts and come in wired or wireless flavors like SRAM Red eTap AXS, which offers a wireless setup. Mechanical derailleurs remain popular for simplicity and affordability, and they can be lighter overall because they lack electronic components.

Yes—medium-cage road derailleurs are often used on gravel builds, and some riders use mullet drivetrains that pair road shifters with mountain derailleurs to get a wider range for mixed terrain. Verify capacity and max sprocket size first so the road derailleur’s chain wrap and max sprocket (e.g., 34T) suit your cassette.

High-end road derailleurs often use carbon fiber cages to cut weight while keeping stiffness, and quality jockey wheels and springs improve long-term shifting reliability. You’ll also see aerodynamic shaping and improved bearing systems, plus brand tech like Shimano’s HyperGlide+ or SRAM’s Exact Actuation that enhance shifting precision.
