Gray Road Cassettes & Cogs

For high-speed racing and flat courses, a narrow-range cassette like 11-28T keeps cadence close and consistent. For hilly endurance or sportive rides, step up to 11-32T or 12-32T to ease climbs; high-end 12-speed options from Shimano Dura-Ace are geared toward racers.

Check your hub’s freehub body and the cassette speed — common standards are Shimano HG, SRAM XD/XDR, or Campagnolo, and XDR is about 1.85mm wider for some road 12-speed cassettes. Also confirm the cassette’s cog count (10–13 speeds) matches your shifter indexing so shifts align.

The largest cog directly affects chain wrap, so using a 32T or larger generally requires a long-cage derailleur to accommodate the extra slack. The smallest cog matters too because it sets your high-end gearing and must be compatible with your derailleur and shifter setup.

Stamped steel cogs are the most durable and budget-friendly option, while mid-range builds often use A7075 alloy cogs with stainless-steel pins for a good strength-to-weight tradeoff. If you want to shave grams for climbing or racing, premium cassettes use titanium sprockets, carbon carriers, or CNC-machined cogs for lighter weight and crisper shifts.

Yes—10T (and smaller 9T) smallest cogs typically require an XD or XDR-compatible freehub because traditional Shimano HG bodies won’t accept those tiny cogs. Road-focused wide-range examples like the SRAM XG-1275 or SunRace CSMZX1X use XD/XDR designs to enable 10T starts and expanded ranges up to 50–52T.
