Compressionless housing, like Jagwire’s aluminum‑link styles, gives crisper brake and shift response for long or high‑load runs, while polymer‑coated or Kevlar‑reinforced housing prioritizes low friction and smoother shifting. If you ride aggressively or run long housing lengths, choose compressionless for precision; for everyday tarmac rides a slick polymer liner works well.

Plan for extra length when your frame has long housing runs or folding geometry, and consider kits like the Jagwire Universal Sport XL designed for extended routing. Leave a little slack for tight turns and future adjustments, and use appropriate ferrules so the extra length doesn’t bind at stops or guides.

Road cables are thinner and lighter—optimized for drop bars and typically paired with 4mm shifter housing and lighter actuation—whereas MTB cables are thicker and tougher to handle flat‑bar leverage and off‑road abuse. Note that some road kits are rated mainly for rim brakes and may not sit well with certain disc setups, so match housing diameter (4 vs 5mm) and pull ratios to your brakes.
