Green Protection

Carry one anytime there's a risk of sudden overnight exposure or hypothermia, since space blankets and emergency bivies pack very small and often weigh under 1 pound. Space blankets use mylar to reflect heat, while bivouac sacks use waterproof topographic fabrics for better weather protection.

A common choice for 1–2 person coverage is an 8x10 foot tarp, which works well as a quick rain cover, sunshade, or groundsheet. Silnylon or cuben fiber tarps give you superior tear resistance while keeping weight down for minimalist setups.

Hub-and-pole tents like the MSR Hubba Hubba NX offer faster pitching and more stability in wind and rain thanks to dedicated polesets, making them better for extended backpacking trips. Non-freestanding ultralight tents are ideal for thru-hiking in mild conditions when cutting grams matters and you can stake to firm ground.

Silnylon and cuben fiber provide strong tear resistance for tarps and shelters, while ripstop nylon with seam-sealed construction improves longevity in tents. Pay attention to reinforced stress points and lightweight aluminum poles, and consider a closed-cell foam pad for ground protection to avoid punctures from rocks.

For comfortable multi-day trips, many hikers choose 2-person tents in the 2–4 pound range; lightweight examples include the MSR Hubba Hubba NX at about a 2-pound pack weight. If you need more room or durability for longer trips, ultralight 3-person options like the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL3 balance space and reduced weight.
