Black Portaledges

For solo big wall trips, prioritize a single-person model with a reliable single-point suspension and reinforced attachment points. Models like the Black Diamond Single Portaledge use ripstop nylon and double-butted aluminum alloy hardware and typically weigh about 10–15 pounds, balancing durability and portability.

Most solo portaledges measure roughly 70–80 inches long and 40–50 inches wide, giving enough room for one climber and a small kit. Choose a flat ripstop fabric platform that resists sagging and a static load rating around 300 pounds for stable overnight use.

They typically hang from a single-point suspension that connects to your anchor with rated carabiners or slings. The hardware is usually double-butted aluminum alloy and many suspension systems are designed to meet UIAA standards, so match the portaledge suspension points to your rope and anchor setup.

Many models include integrated mosquito netting and storm flaps, along with seam-taped edges and durable ripstop fabric to shed wind and moisture. Those features help reduce drafts and insect intrusion, but on exposed pitches you should position the portaledge to minimize wind exposure.

Expect a typical portaledge to weigh about 10–15 pounds, with some Aclim8 and Metolius models around a 12-pound pack weight for easier hauling. The double-butted aluminum alloy poles and quick-deploy clips fold compactly, so they pack efficiently for long approaches without excessive bulk.
