Black Paddling Navigation

A dedicated handheld GPS offers more reliable positioning on open water thanks to high-sensitivity receivers and dual GPS/GLONASS; models like Garmin also include worldwide basemaps and a barometric altimeter for better situational awareness. Navigation apps are convenient and make good backups, but pair best with a rugged handheld or wearable for extended coastal exploration.

Compact fishfinder GPS systems such as the Humminbird Helix 5 are built to fit smaller boats and provide useful depth readings for kayak anglers. A lightweight handheld or wearable like the Polar 200 can supplement position tracking without adding bulk to your cockpit.

Keep mountings low-profile and use portable options like deflatable chart cases and compact GPS units — the Polar 200's small round screen is an example of a device designed for minimal deck footprint. For larger units, choose secure mounts that hold high-impact plastic housings close to the cockpit so gear stays accessible but out of the paddle path.

If you'll be paddling in coastal or offshore Class D/H conditions, a marine VHF radio with integrated GPS adds an important layer of safety by combining position reporting with reliable communication. Lightweight handheld VHFs with integrated GPS are especially useful for solo or tandem trips where quick contact may be needed.

Look for waterproof construction and durable fabrics like high-denier nylon/PVC for chart cases, plus high-impact plastic for device housings to withstand knocks and spray. Also consider gear with high-contrast bitmap digital charts that resist water exposure and high-sensitivity receivers for consistent readings.
