Brown Mountaineering

A mountaineering harness needs to fit comfortably over multiple insulation layers and have adjustable leg loops you can open without removing crampons. Gear loops should be positioned for easy access while wearing thick gloves. For helmets, CE and UIAA certification is non-negotiable — these ratings confirm the helmet has passed standardized impact and retention tests. Hard-shell construction (like polycarbonate) holds up better against repeated rockfall impacts than foam-only hybrid designs, which is important on alpine routes where overhead hazards are common.

Boot compatibility hinges on tech inserts at the toe and heel and a generous walk-mode range of motion for comfortable ascents; many ultralight models list weights as low as 1800g per pair. Tecnica Zero G-style boots exemplify hard ski-mo performance while retaining the articulation and insert layout needed for tech bindings.

The key is making sure your crampon's stiffness rating is at least equal to your boot's rating. A C2 semi-rigid crampon pairs well with a B2 boot for most alpine routes, while a C3 rigid crampon requires a B3 fully rigid boot with both heel and toe welts for a step-in fit. Getting this pairing wrong can cause the crampon to pull loose on steep terrain, so always check compatibility before you buy.

Base your pack size on trip length: 40–45L works well for day tours and most ski-mo days, while 50–75L covers multi-day expeditions and hauling extra gear. Consider models like the Black Diamond Mission 75 for longer trips or the Speed 40/50 for lighter alpine objectives; many 50–70L packs weigh around 4 lbs.

For glacier travel and steep mountaineering choose crampons and ice axes designed for secure front-pointing and reliable penetration into steep snow and ice, and pair them with dry-treated ropes for better performance in wet or icy conditions. Also look for adjustable harnesses with belay loops so the whole system works together on technical glaciated terrain.
