Black Mountain Bike Flat Handlebars

Think about fitting handlebar width to your shoulder span; most mountain bikers fall between 580–780mm. Narrower bars near 560mm suit commuting and hybrids, while you can cut down stock 800mm bars for a more aggressive, downhill-oriented stance.

Match the clamp diameter to your stem—31.8mm remains common for traditional setups, while 35mm is used on modern, stiffness-focused builds. If you ride aggressive terrain or want a stiffer front end, a 35mm option like the Race Face Next R 35 provides extra rigidity for DH-level demands.

Aluminum bars offer high durability and bend-over-break resistance, making them a sensible choice for heavy use and impact-prone riding. Carbon delivers lighter weight and better vibration damping—some trail carbon bars come in under 300g—but they tend to be pricier and carry a higher risk of sudden failure in severe impacts.

For wrist comfort, aim for 5–9 degrees of backsweep, which helps keep your wrists aligned, and consider rise between 20–60mm to relieve pressure on steep, technical trails. Flat 0mm rise works well for XC racing, while higher rises around 60mm promote a more upright, all-day-friendly posture.

You can trim many bars from a stock width (some come up to 800mm) to better match your shoulder width and handling preference; bikes like the Enve M6 at 780mm show how width affects stability. Also pay attention to material and geometry—carbon options such as the Flatbike carbon at 680mm balance compliance and versatility if you need a slightly narrower, lighter setup.
