Yellow Mountain Bike Derailleurs

Check the derailleur's maximum cassette tooth capacity — it must cover your largest cog, for example a 10-50T cassette needs a derailleur rated for 50T. Also verify speed compatibility (9/10/11/12-speed) and that the derailleur matches your shifter's cable-pull ratio to avoid poor shifting.

If you ride technical trails often, a clutch-equipped derailleur reduces chain slap and improves retention over roots and rocks. Models like Shimano Shadow RD+ or SRAM Type 2 use modified spring tension to keep the chain on the cassette, which helps on steep descents and rough terrain.

Generally you shouldn't mix Shimano and SRAM derailleurs and shifters because their cable-pull ratios differ — Shimano uses a 2:1 ratio while SRAM uses 1:1. Older 8- and 9-speed Shimano components remain broadly compatible across road and MTB platforms, but newer 10/11/12-speed systems are not cross-compatible, so match brand and speed rating.

Many gravel and adventure riders prefer MTB-style derailleurs because they handle wider gear ranges and provide better chain stability on mixed terrain. Components like the Shimano XT M8100 are built for durability on steep climbs and technical descents, making them useful off-road and on rough gravel routes.

Electronic derailleurs offer motor-driven, consistent shifts and can use wireless actuation for reliable performance in varied conditions. They eliminate cable stretch issues found in mechanical systems, but require matching electronic shifters and compatible speed ratings for proper operation.
