Orange Mountain Bike Clipless Pedals

It comes down to the riding you do: SPD setups like the Shimano XTR M9100 favor XC and smoother trail riding with precise SPD-style retention, while Crank Brothers pedals offer two-sided, 360-degree entry for quick clipping. Enduro-style models (for example the Mallet) add a larger metal platform and more contact for stability on rough, high-speed descents.

Yes when the pedal and cleat brand match: SPD-compatible pedals pair with recessed-cleat mountain shoes so the steel cleats sit below the outsole for easier walking. Make sure you use the correct cleat for your pedal system because fit requires matching pedal-cleat brands.

If you ride mixed terrain and want to protect your knees, more float can help — many MTB models offer about 5 degrees of float to allow natural foot movement and reduce stress. Less float tends to give a firmer, more precise feel, so choose based on how much lateral movement your knees need during rough sections.

For enduro and downhill where secure footing and impact resistance matter, consider Mallet-style platforms like the Crank Brothers Mallet Enduro, which pair a large metal platform with strong retention. Their platform construction and adjustable spring tension help minimize foot bounce on big hits and technical descents.

Start by dialing fore-aft and lateral cleat position plus cleat depth so your foot sits naturally for efficient pedaling and reduced knee strain. Then set spring tension to balance retention and release—looser for easier entry/exit and walking with recessed cleats, tighter for a firmer connection on aggressive trails.
