Black Mountain Bike Cleats & Small Parts

Higher float values (10 to 15 degrees) allow more heel rotation and can help reduce joint stress on long cross-country efforts. If you want a firmer connection, standard 5–6 degree options such as Shimano SPD's 6-degree cleats offer a more stable feel while still providing some movement.

Most two-bolt SPD-style cleats use the 2-hole mounting pattern and are designed to sit recessed in MTB shoe soles, which makes walking on varied terrain much easier. Metal or brass constructions also help shed mud and resist wear in filthy trail conditions.

Double-sided systems excel for aggressive off-road use where quick entry from either side matters, while single-sided cleats are often better for touring, commuting, or gravel when easier walking and sole traction are priorities. Models like the Crankbrothers Candy pair durable brass construction with a double-sided platform for fast clipping in muddy conditions.

Position the cleat between the first and fifth metatarsals to start, then use the fore-aft tracks to fine-tune placement for comfort and pedaling efficiency. Cross-country riders usually move cleats slightly forward for more power, whereas gravity or enduro riders set them farther back to reduce numbness and improve stability.

Metal cleats, for example Crankbrothers Candy or Shimano SPD, hold up well but benefit from regular mud clearing and an occasional tension adjustment with an allen key. Also check shims or spacers for sole clearance and tighten the 2-hole mounting bolts if you notice any play.
