Red Mountain Bike Chains & Chain Guides

Match your chain to the cassette speed: 9-, 10- and 11-speed chains differ in width while single-speed chains are thicker. Also size chain length for your wheelbase and gear range to ensure proper tension and smooth shifting.

If you ride aggressive downhill or enduro, a full top-and-bottom guide with an integrated bash guard adds noticeable retention on technical descents. Models like the OneUp Components Top Chain Guide V2 weigh around 40 grams and provide extra security on rocky trails.

Most chain guides require specific mounts such as ISCG, ISCG05, E-Type, D-Type, or BSA and are built for single-chainring (1x) drivetrains. They generally won’t work with traditional multi-chainring setups, so verify your frame’s mount standard before buying.

Top-only guides are a good choice for lighter trail use when you want basic retention with minimal weight, while full top-and-bottom systems suit downhill riding where maximum security is needed. Many quality guides weigh under 50 grams, and examples like the OneUp Top Chain Guide V2 balance low weight with protection.

Higher-strength steel with reinforced coatings resists rust and wear best in wet, muddy conditions, while titanium or nickel-plated steel offer improved corrosion resistance. Chromoly and alloy steel chains provide a balance of durability and affordability, so choose a material that matches how often you ride in harsh terrain.
