Mountain Bike Cassettes & Cogs

For sustained steep climbs and technical ascents, choose a wide-range cassette like a 10-52t to give very low gears for slow, powerful pedal strokes. The 10-52t delivers about a 520% spread and is common on aggressive all-mountain and enduro setups; models like the SRAM XG-1299 Eagle illustrate that range well.

Start by matching the cassette’s cog count and largest-to-smallest tooth range to your derailleur’s capacity and cage length; medium or long cages are typically needed for ranges up to 52t. Also confirm the cassette works with your indexed shifting system—Shimano, SRAM, or Campagnolo pull ratios—and adjust chain length when fitting a much larger largest cog.

Yes—e-bike cassettes are reinforced to withstand the higher torque from motors and are often built from durable stamped steel or reinforced designs. These versions prioritize strength and wear resistance, making them a better choice for powered riding in demanding conditions.

Most cogs are made from stamped steel for durability, with aluminum used selectively in lockrings or high-end sprocket carriers to save weight. Cassettes are stacked and secured with a lockring and often riveted or pinned together, which affects serviceability and mud-shedding.

If you favor XC speed, lean toward lighter racing-oriented cassettes with tighter ranges and smaller largest cogs, such as 10-44t options that prioritize quick acceleration. For mixed all-mountain or enduro riding, a 10-50t or 10-52t like those used on Shimano XTR 10-51t or Race Face Aeffect 10-50t setups gives the low-end grunt for steep climbs without sacrificing top-end gearing.
