Brown Mountain Bike Cables

For wet, muddy riding, stainless steel or polymer-coated cables perform best because stainless resists corrosion and polymer coatings keep contaminants from abrading the wire. Coated options are especially helpful in sealed systems where mud and water can raise friction.

Match the cable diameter and barrel shape to your components: shifter cables are typically 1.2–1.3mm for Shimano/SRAM or 1.1–1.2mm for Campagnolo, and brake cables come with MTB large-barrel ends for flat-bar levers. Also check pull ratio for brand compatibility, since SRAM often needs specific cables despite some Shimano crossover.

Choose 5mm MTB housing when you need extra flexibility for tight frame routing or off-road impacts, since MTB housings are more flexible and often use internal spiral patterns. Road setups usually use stiffer 4mm housing, so 5mm is the better pick for aggressive trail, enduro, or downhill geometry.

Inspect cables and housing regularly and replace them if you see fraying, rough shifting, or sticky feel under load; contaminated systems wear faster. Affordable options like Jagwire Basics work fine for rim brakes, but braided nylon-coated stainless or polished stainless with liners will typically last longer in wet, gritty conditions.

Flat-bar MTB levers usually require MTB-specific large-barrel brake cable ends paired with 5mm MTB housing to maintain proper fit and flexibility. For tight bends or folding frame geometries you can also consider specialty housings like Nokon "string of beads" that flex sharply without kinking.
