Also check pull ratio for brand compatibility, since SRAM often needs specific cables despite some Shimano crossover.

Choose 5mm MTB housing when you need extra flexibility for tight frame routing or off-road impacts, since MTB housings are more flexible and often use internal spiral patterns. Road setups usually use stiffer 4mm housing, so 5mm is the better pick for aggressive trail, enduro, or downhill geometry.

Inspect cables and housing regularly and replace them if you see fraying, rough shifting, or sticky feel under load; contaminated systems wear faster.
