Purple Mountain Bike Brakes

Hydraulic discs are the better choice for aggressive riding like enduro, downhill, or e‑MTB where one-finger control and strong modulation matter. High-end hydraulics — especially 4-piston setups or models like the SRAM Maven — can deliver up to 200–250N of force and use sealed mineral oil to resist contamination.

Match rotor size to your riding and your fork/frame clearance: 140–160mm is common for XC, 180–203mm suits trail and enduro, and 220mm is typical for DH. Also confirm caliper clearance for 29‑inch or 27.5‑inch wheels to avoid needing adapters.

Sintered metallic pads last about 2–3x longer than organic resin pads in wet, muddy conditions, so they’re the practical choice for mud and heavy commuting. Resin pads are acceptable for drier, moderate‑wet trail use if longevity in mud isn’t your priority.

Confirm your frame and fork use either post‑mount or flat‑mount standards before buying because mismatched mounts often require adapters or different calipers. Also check if your bike needs larger rotors (180–203mm or 220mm) for extra stopping power and adequate caliper clearance.

Bleed intervals are typically every 6–12 months, or sooner if the lever feels spongy; sealed mineral oil systems help reduce contamination but still need periodic service. Inspect braided hoses for wear and follow fluid compatibility (mineral oil or DOT 4/5.1) — top models like the Hayes Dominion A4 emphasize modulation and serviceability for all‑mountain use.
