For flatter XC and gravel rides, smaller 140–160mm rotors keep weight down and provide adequate stopping. For trail and enduro, step up to 180–203mm rotors for better heat management, and consider thin-profile Shimano RT-CL900 rotors if you want less wobble in those sizes.

Consider conditions: metallic pads handle heat and wet, gritty winter use better, while organic/resin pads give quieter modulation and quicker initial bedding. New pads typically measure 3–4mm thick, and you should replace them once they wear below about 1mm.

Four-piston calipers deliver stronger, more consistent stopping for aggressive trail and downhill runs, and some models like the Hope V4 support vented rotors up to 3.3mm for added durability. Two-piston calipers are lighter and suit cross-country or gravel where reduced weight and easier modulation matter.

Match the caliper's post-mount or flat-mount spacing to your frame and fork, and make sure the rotor diameter works with your hub's six-bolt or Centerlock interface. Also check hose length for your frame size so routing stays clean and brake operation isn’t strained.

Set lever reach so your fingers sit comfortably on the blade and the front brake gets full modulation without overreaching. Many levers are aluminum with carbon fiber blades, and hoses come in nylon or Kevlar-braided options—trim and secure the hose to your frame size to avoid kinks and excess stretch.
