Blue Mountain Bike Bottom Brackets

Threaded BSA and BB92/PF92 bottom brackets are the go-to for muddy, rough trails because threaded designs resist contamination and are easier to service. Models like the Wheels Manufacturing BB92 with sealed bearings and nylon cups offer extra durability and simpler post-ride maintenance.

Match your frame's shell width and inner diameter to the BB standard to avoid creaks and poor pedaling efficiency. Common measurements to check are 68–73mm for road-like shells, 73–92mm for MTB shells, and inner diameters of 42mm or 46mm depending on BB30 or PF30 designs.

A 30mm spindle boosts stiffness and power transfer, which helps in XC and trail riding where pedaling efficiency matters. Bearing placement and outboard bearings that narrow Q-factor also influence heel clearance and overall pedaling feel.

Yes, adapters can convert press-fit shells to threaded interfaces or allow different spindle diameters so you can fit a preferred crankset into a PF30 or PressFit 30 shell. The SRAM PressFit 30 standard (46mm shell, nylon cups) is a common case where adapters are used to broaden compatibility.

Sealed cartridge bearings and durable cup materials reduce service frequency and help keep drag low; ceramic bearings can lower friction toward the 0.5W range while IP67-style seals improve water and dirt resistance. Shimano BB92 examples pair integrated stiffness with sealed bearings to balance longevity and easier upkeep.
