Men's Orange Rain & Wind Pants

If you expect heavy downpours and high winds, pick waterproof rain pants with 10,000–30,000mm ratings and fully taped seams for hiking or backpacking. Ultralight wind pants (3–6 ounces) work for fastpacking and running, while hardshell hybrids with Gore-Tex or Super Dry Tec handle mixed wet-and-windy days.

Most brands run true-to-size, and checking inseam lengths from 30–34 inches helps ensure proper coverage over boots. Look for adjustable waists, Velcro hems, and a gusseted crotch to avoid binding and to get a custom fit when layering.

Ultralight packable pants are designed for minimal weight and small pack size—many fall in the 3–12 ounce range and pack down under about 100g—so they’re great as emergency layers or for fastpacking. Models like the Zpacks Vertice or Outdoor Research Helium offer full waterproofing at roughly 3 ounces while stowing into a palm-sized stuff sack.

For high-output efforts, aim for breathable membranes in the 10,000–30,000 g/m²/24hrs range and pit or thigh vents to dump heat quickly. Durable venting zips and shells like Pertex DiamondFuse or Gore-Tex help manage moisture while still shedding wind and rain.

Full-length side zips and ankle gaiters make on-off hassle-free and improve boot compatibility, especially with side-zip hardshell rain pants. Elastic or adjustable waists, Velcro hems, and reinforced knees add fit options and durability when you’re wearing bulky mountaineering or hiking boots.
