Men's Green Rain & Wind Jackets

Think about where and how hard you’ll be out in the elements: ultralight windbreakers and 2.5-layer pieces work well for short showers and fast hikes and can pack down under 10 oz, while 3-layer hardshells are built for sustained downpours and winds beyond 60 mph. Models like the Arc'teryx Beta LT use Gore-Tex Pro and deliver the rugged breathability and abrasion resistance you’d want on demanding backcountry trips.

For severe mountain storms aim toward the higher end of the range—around 20,000mm hydrostatic head and breathability figures closer to 20,000–30,000 g/m²/24h—to shed driving rain and manage sweat. Also prioritize taped seams, waterproof zips, and a 3-layer construction like the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L (20k/20k) for the best all-around protection.

Most brands run true-to-size, so try your usual size but leave enough room for a midlayer if you plan to backpack; regular or relaxed fits give easier layering than slim athletic cuts. Don’t forget to check features like drop-tail hems for hip coverage and longer torsos on technical models if you need extra weather protection.

Pit zips and mesh-lined core vents are the most effective for active ventilation because they dump heat quickly during high-output efforts, while waterproof zippers and taped seams focus on keeping water out. If you plan on strenuous use, prioritize breathable membranes with pit zips and breathability ratings in the 10,000–30,000 g/m²/24h range to balance sweat management and weatherproofing.

If weight and stowability matter, look for ultralight 2.5-layer or packable designs that compress small and can weigh under 10 oz, or consider tried-and-true ultralight options like the Outdoor Research Helium Rain (2.5-layer, 12 oz) for a balance of packability and weather resistance. Pay attention to DWR-treated nylon or polyester outers and a simple hood adjustment so you can shed showers quickly without extra bulk.
